Renmin University of China Announces Chinese-Style Modernization Index Findings

On October 30, 2024, Renmin University of China hosted the Chinese-Style Modernization Index Launch Conference, attended by nearly 100 experts and scholars from various institutions including the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Capital University of Economics and Business, and Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. University President Lin Shangli and State Council Counselor Xian Zude delivered keynote speeches, emphasizing the practical importance of this index.

Associate Dean Li Jingping of the School of Statistics released the comprehensive index report, which covers the period from 2020 to 2023 and utilizes a "Five-in-One" framework with 5 secondary indicators, 24 tertiary indicators, and 93 quaternary indicators. The findings show steady improvement in China's overall modernization index with good coordination among sub-indices, while regional analysis reveals Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Tianjin, Fujian, Jiangsu, and Guangdong leading in modernization development.

Expert commentators including former Vice President He Yaomin, Xia Yi from the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, and other academic leaders praised the index for its scientific approach and practical value. They highlighted its role in bridging theory and practice, providing data support for policy-making, and offering a quantitative framework for regions to identify strengths and weaknesses. The conference represents a significant step in China's efforts to develop indigenous academic frameworks for measuring and understanding its unique modernization path.
