Renmin University of China Organizes Symposium on Microdata Development and Applications
The National Bureau of Statistics and Renmin University of China jointly convened a high-level symposium on September 26, 2024, to address critical issues in microdata development and application for national economic and social development. The event was attended by Liu Aihua, Chief Economist of the National Bureau of Statistics, alongside university leadership and academic experts to discuss the strategic role of big data as an engine for China's economic growth and the challenges of microdata utilization in the information age.
The symposium highlighted significant achievements in microdata development through collaborative efforts between the National Bureau of Statistics and university data development centers. Representatives from both the Peking University and Renmin University data development centers reported substantial progress, with the Renmin University center serving over 1,000 users and producing more than 100 research outputs while supporting major scientific research projects and government decision-making processes. The discussions emphasized the balance between expanding data accessibility and maintaining security standards, with particular attention to data anonymization technologies and standardized microdata provision protocols.
The gathering reinforced institutional commitments to advancing China's data science capabilities within the framework of Chinese-style modernization, with participants focusing on practical solutions for expanding microdata applications across social governance and economic development sectors. The collaborative approach between government statistical agencies and academic institutions was positioned as essential for addressing contemporary challenges in data science while ensuring that statistical data effectively serves national development objectives and supports evidence-based policy formulation.
